TOPLESS REVIEW 2012

MAIN SECTIONS

The Topless Review was originally an attempt to keep a record of all the celebrity uncoverings that occur in Newspapers, Magazines, and on Television in the current year. However in more recent years coverage of Newspapers has fallen away due to a combination of reduced awareness of anything of relevance and seemingly less instances of what used to be a fairly frequent event. Magazines even more so.

Therefore it is only now the Television section that retains any concerted effort to be as comprehensive as possible.

Symbols Used (entries added since the last update will show the symbol in RED)

Sherlock (BBC1 - 01/01/2012) Series 2, episode 1: A Scandal in Belgravia
J Lara Pulver (Irene Adler) - the tip of the side of her left breast in briefly seen as Watson (Martin Freeman) enters the room while she is standing in front of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) whom she has just received in her drawing room unashamedly completely naked in order to brazenly counter Holmes' formidable ability to draw astounding insights from tiny details in the mode of one's attire and thereby remain an enigma to him - no nipple nudity is seen - then she sits naked but with her arms arranged to cover her breasts as she continues to assertively disarm the two men with her barefaced nerve - then her left nipple is seen for a single frame as she rises from her seat bowing to Watson's appeal that she cover herself with Holmes' coat which Watson holds ready for her - this final exposure is inadvertent in an overall scene that makes every effort to keep any revealing nudity off the screen with carefully configured shot set-ups and tight framing.

Rachael (C4 - 12/01/2012)
J Suki Alice Waterhouse (Rachael) - her left breast is briefly seen over her shoulder while she is sitting in a bath pleasuring herself and ignoring the furious knocks on the bathroom door from other family members who want to use the bathroom too - filmed in a suggestive way only with this brief glimpse being the only real nudity that reaches the screen except for a very out-of-focus frontal topless view nearer the end. A 3-minute drama short shown in the Random Acts strand which also starred Shaun Dooley, Maxine Peake and Holliday Grainger.

Birdsong (BBC1 - ep1:22/01/2012; ep2:29/01/2012) 2-part drama
(ep1) J Clémence Poésy (Isabelle) - topless lovemaking scene on a bed underneath English houseguest Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne) as they consummate their smouldering passion for one another while her husband is away • topless as she puts on her corselet as she sits on the side of the bed in which she and Eddie have been continuing their affair during the daytime while her husband is at work.
(ep2) J Kata Peto (Young French Woman) - topless laying on her back on a bed as the young English soldier Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne), who has paid for her sexual services, appraises her while growing increasingly anxious about his inability to muster his libido which causes him to wave his service dagger threateningly at her as if holding her responsible for his personal traumas until she manages to calm him down and relieve him of the blade.

Inside Men (BBC1 - ep2:09/02/2012) 4-part series
J Kierston Wareing (Gina) - briefly seen topless as she sits up in bed and readjusts the duvet after her boyfriend Marcus (Warren Brown) gets out of the bed.

Episode 1 - (08/03/2012) - The Past is a Foreign Country
J MyAnna Buring (Lilly) - topless in her art studio as she strips off and smears red paint all over her body and then lays down on her front on the floor and makes body impressions on a canvas - her breasts are only seen while covered in red paint.
J Claire Foy (Charlotte) - topless lovemaking scene in bed underneath housemate Jack (Sam Claflin) as she loses her virginity to him during a party - detail here is masked a bit by light glare - later her right breast is very briefly seen as she turns to lay against him to talk after they have finished making love - then she moves onto her front propped on her elbows with her right breast briefly seen from the side as Jack gets off the bed and returns to the party after glibly congratulating her on having such a liberal attitude to casual sex which leaves her befuddled because it had meant a lot more to her than that.

J Maisie Dee (Daisy) - topless laying in bed with customer Grand Maester Pycelle (Julian Glover) when Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and his men burst into the room to confront him with accusations and she quickly scuttles off with momentary full frontal nudity also seen.

Episode 4 - (23/04/2012)
J Maisie Dee (Daisy) - full frontal nudity standing in the royal bedchamber as her dress is removed by fellow brothel girl Ros (Esmé Bianco) when they are hired to put on private sexy show for young king Joffrey's (Jack Gleeson) idle pleasure in his room as a surprise - then rear nudity as Ros lightly slaps her backside at Joffrey's request which then causes her to scream in pain and terror as the sadistic lad demands to see increasingly rougher punishment inflicted.

J Sahara Knite (Armeca) - topless and rear nudity in a tavern as she flirts with the city watch commander Bronn (Jerome Flynn) and sits naked on his lap as he and his men raucously enjoy themselves on the eve of an impending siege by an invading army from the sea.

J Kate Magowan (Justine Thompson) - full frontal nudity and rear nudity laying dead on an autopsy table as pathologist Dr Leo Dalton (William Gaminara) carries out his examination - her face is seen at the same time but it is at a medium distance and seen in the glass reflection of the viewing gallery window - and so it could easily have been a body double.

J Gina McKee (Catherina Sforza) - lovemaking scene on a bed with her diplomatic guest from Rome, young cardinal Cesare Borgia (François Arnaud), with her silhouetted breasts seen though her nightdress rendered transparent by back lighting as she sits astride him and leans forwards - her face is not seen in a continuous sequence and in the remainder of the sex scene she keeps the nightdress on with no further revealing nudity seen - it could be a body double.

Sex Story: Fifty Shades of Grey (C4 - 29/07/2012) one-off documentary
J Rosie Violet Wise (Anastasia Steele) - topless and occasional rear nudity in a series of mini-sequences in a large bedroom with her dominative lover Christian Grey (Edward Lewis French) to whom she is the submissive in their S&M activities. These dialogue-free scenes, filmed in B&W, were used to punctuate a documentary about the success of the erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey".

13 Steps Down (ITV1 - part 1:13/08/2012) 2-part drama
J Victoria Bewick (Danila Kovic) - the side of her right breast is briefly seen as she peevishly gets out of bed and puts on a robe when her cranky new boyfriend Mix Cellini (Luke Treadaway) decides he is not in the mood for sex and prefers instead to bore her with a discourse about his pet subject of a local serial killer from the recent past- an area of shadow prevents her nipple from quite being seen.
Also in part 1, Melanie Gray (Colette) is almost seen topless as she disrobes in front of Mix, but a careful shot set-up keeps her nipples unseen; and then in part 2 Elarica Gallacher (Nerissa) has a sex scene astride her boyfriend with some slight side of each breast seen from behind - neither scenes quite merit a more formal entry.

Coming Up (C4 - 20/08/2012) ep: Colour
J MyAnna Buring (Sam) - sitting in a bath moaning in pain as she scrubs herself so hard that blood is drawn as her Obsessive Compulsive Disorder uncontrollably compels her to go to excessive lengths to eradicate grime in her house - with her breasts very briefly seen as she recoils when her daughter Holly (Leah Nathan) reaches to try and help her after coming home from school to discover her mother's disorder has escalated to new extremes.

Parade's End (BBC2 -started 24/08/2012) 5-part serial

J Rebecca Hall (Sylvia Tietjens) - her left breast is briefly seen when her paramour Gerald Drake (Jack Huston) barges into her boudoir drunk and uninvited and forces her to the floor after becoming affronted by her constant rebuffs - and she submits to his urgency as he yanks down the side of her nightdress revealing her left breast momentarily.

Accused (BBC1 - 04/09/2012) Series 2, episode 4 of 4: Tina's Story
